Tourism?
The economy of the Arrochar/Tarbet communities relies heavily on locals and visitors interpreting, understanding, enjoying and protecting the natural and cultural heritage of the area, which sits at the heart of Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park.
Visitors can boost the local economy by spending money in our B&Bs, self-catering accommodation, campsites, chalets and hotels. They will spend even more money if they stay to visit local attractions, buy gifts and crafts and enjoy quality food/drink at our cafes, restaurants and takeaways. Outdoor activity is big business too – on the water, in the forests, on landed estates, on the cycle tracks and on the lowland and upland paths.
As businesses thrive, employment and skills opportunities increase – both for locals and for those wanting to work or settle here.
The tourism and hospitality industries are not the only sectors affected if the local economy and population are boosted. With more people and businesses come the need for more services and the possibility of more jobs including plumbers, electricians, construction professionals, health and social care workers, primary teachers, nursery teachers, marketing experts, farmer workers, land-based work, renewable energy, transport providers and infrastructure – the list is endless!
The secondary positive impacts of tourism are often not fully understood or valued, though it’s also recognised that the potential negative impacts of increasing visitor numbers on the land, wildlife and communities must be mitigated – the National Park Authority was set up to tackle some of these issues.
We believe the Hidden Heritage Trail provides an opportunity for people to explore and interpret our landscape and heritage while helping people to enjoy and understand its value. Stimulated by the success of the Hidden Heritage Trail, Arrochar and Tarbet Community Development Trust have produced a new leaflet of walks in the area - you can download a copy here or pick one up for a small donation from the 3 Villages Hall in Arrochar.
